House Democrats Calling For Review Of Michael Elliot's Escape

Posted: Updated:

IONIA, Mich. (WLNS) - Lawmakers are now calling for an investigation of the Department of Corrections and a prison in Ionia after convicted murderer Michael Elliot escaped last week.

Elliot is serving multiple life sentences for murder and managed to escape from the Ionia correctional facility last week, but he was captured the next day.

The prison suspended two of it's employees, one guard and one officer for "violating multiple work rules."

But some lawmakers say the "real problem" stems from budget cuts for prison staff.

6 News reporter Joe Khalil spoke with a retired prison guard who worked for 26 years, mostly in Ionia. He says if they had enough tower guards, like they did in the past Elliot would not have escaped.

"They emptied out the gun towers and took away the full-time security vehicle. It only emboldened prisoners to maybe re-think that and try to find a way to escape. What they did to create the situation was to make it less safe," said Jeff Booth, Retired Prison Guard.
