Horses Taken Away From Farm For Third Time

Posted: Updated:

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, Mich. (WLNS) - For the third time police took horses away from an owner in Livingston County.

And now the owner is charged with animal cruelty.

A horse found dead on a Livingston County farm led authorities to take away nine others and charge the owner with animal abandonment and cruelty.

Velva Wainscott owns the home on Byron Road, just north of Howell.

Last month officials found her horse lying dead on a paddock, along with nine survining horses who lived outside in bitter cold temperatures, without shelter and proper food or water.

"They're underweight, so they haven't been eating, they haven't been getting the hay or the grain that they need to keep their weight up and it takes a toll on a horse," said Jill Fredrickson, President, Horses Haven. "They need food to stay warm, especially in the bitter cold conditions that we've had this winter."

The horses are doing better now that they're out of Wainscott's care, but they have a long road to recovery.

Two of the worst of horses were brought to Horses Haven. Volunteers will nurse them back to health and that will cost them hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.

Officials took the other seven horses to Starry Skies in Ann Arbor.

Wainscott wasn't home when 6 News stopped by Monday, but this isn't the first time it's happened.

"It's the third time we've had horses from this farm," said Fredrickson.

In November 2012 authorities seized about a dozen horses from the same farm.

Wainscott got her horses back less than six months later and a judge dropped the animal cruelty charges filed against her.

The Livingston County proseuctor says Wainscott's latest animal cruelty trial is scheduled for April.
