MSU Celebrates Grand Opening Of New Plaza

Posted: Updated:

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Michigan State celebrated the grand opening of a newly designed plaza on campus Tuesday.

Morrill Plaza was built on the site where Morrill Hall once stood, the 113-year-old building was demolished last year. The new building has two towers with kiosks that feature biographies of prominent members of faculty.

Morrill Hall was once a dormitory for women and also housed some classrooms. The new area will honor the history of women and their role in the early years at MSU.

President Lou Anna K. Simon said the plaza honors the Morrill Act. "You have to propel yourself forward based on your past and the special roll that you play in the world. The land grant concept was something that was generally pioneered at Michigan State and has animated what we've done for over near a 160 years," said Simon.
