Police Bust Two Major Mafia Crime Families

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - Police say they've broken up a major organized crime operation in Italy and the United States.

Agents conducted a series of raids overnight, resulting in dozens of arrests, including members of the Gambino crime family.

Officials say they've spent the past two years investigating an international drug and weapons smuggling operation.

Police say members of the notorious 'Ndrangheta crime family in Italy and members of the Gambino crime family in New York were involved.

"The 'Ndrangheta aimed to move deadly narcotics across international boundaries, attempting to build a bridge of criminality and corruption to stretch from South America to Italy and back to New York," said Marshall Miller, U.S. Judge.

They're charged with drug trafficking, money laundering and firearms offenses.
