Dog, 6 Pups Found Abandoned In Home

Posted: Updated:

RIVES TWP., Mich. (WLNS) - A female dog and six of her puppies were left-behind by their owners after the tenants were evicted from a Jackson County home. The dogs are now being housed at the Jackson County Animal Shelter.

"We do see this occasionally. Most people take good care of their animals and they love their animals, whether it be cats or dogs, and they don't want to be away from their animals. So, it will on occasion happen, especially if someone has no where else to go," said Undersheriff Christopher Kuhl with the Jackson County Sheriff's office.

"They all appear to have good weights on them. As the day progressed, we could tell that they were probably eating things that they shouldn't have. They had some intestinal parasites. We wormed them, gave them their vaccines, put a little bit of advantage on them and they're already doing quite a bit better," said Sandy Clark, the kennel attendant at the Jackson County Animal Shelter.

If the owners don't come to claim the dogs within 10 days, the mom and six puppies will go for up for adoption. The shelter has already received several inquiries to adopt them, so if the owner doesn't claim them, they say they'll do a raffle for them.

"It's not clear at this point whether there's anything animal-wise to be charged, and if there is, then we'll pursue that, but at this point, it just seems to be some animals left behind," said Kuhl.

"These guys are going to grow up and make somebody happy, healthy family members someday," said Clark.

The dogs were found at a Rives Township home. Vets say the pups and their 2-year-old mom appear to be healthy and are taking to the shelter well.
