Shelter Seeing Special Needs Pets This Winter

Posted: Updated:

MASON, Mich. (WLNS) -- Months of bitter cold temperatures and all this snow isn't just tough on us, it's even worse for animals.

Staff at the Ingham County Animal Shelter have taken in many animals this season who have special needs.

"We've had a lot [of animals] and we've definitely been looking for more and new fosters," said Ashley Hayes Volunteer & Special Events Liaison, Ingham County Animal Control. "We've had a lot of pregnant animals this time of year, as well. Which is kind of unusual."

Staff blame the brutal, bitter cold winter on many of the animal's injuries. From pregnant dogs to blind cats and pets who come to the shelter with broken legs and frost bite, this season has been tough and it's taking a toll.

"With the cold, that might be causing more animals to get orthopedic injuries. It definitely seems like we've had more than normal this time of year," Hayes said.

Special needs animals shouldn't stay at the shelter, but there aren't enough foster families to take them all in. "It's really important. It's just a temporary stay at someone's home, which really helps them become adoptable so they can find their forever home," Hayes said.

The more socialization animals gets, the better chance they'll get adopted, which is exactly what these pets need.

"If we keep getting animals, especially the ones that are special needs and stuff, we're going to start filling up. We definitely need fosters and adopters," Hayes said.

However, with more snowfall Sunday and more on the way, this winter weather isn't giving these shelter animals a break, so they hope foster families will help.

If you're interested in fostering or adopting an animal call the Ingham County Animal Shelter at (517) 676-8370.
