Posted: Updated:

OKEMOS, Mich. (WLNS) - Dangerous, costly and just plain annoying, potholes can not only cause a car accident by playing 'dodge em,' they can also require expensive repairs.

Drivers in Michigan pay about $2.3 billion per year in unnecessary car repairs, says a report by TRIP, a national transportation research group.

There's good news for drivers who have recently hit a pothole and need a repair. If your car needs a repair, consider entering the second annual Pothole Pocketbook Contest.

In order to enter the contest, you must first fix your car and save a copy of your repair bill. If you take a picture of the damage done to your car, you can get an additional entry in the contest.

After fixing your car, simply take a picture or scan your repair bill and fill our the entry form online.

Drivers can win up to $500 for pothole-related vehicle repairs. The contest is open to all Michigan-licensed drivers age 18 and older.

Winners will be announced throughout March.
