Bill Requires Hospitals To Give Safe Sleep Info

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Legislation requiring hospitals to distribute materials to new parents regarding safe sleeping practices for infants is moving forward in Lansing.

The Michigan House on Tuesday voted 105-3 in favor of the bill that also would make parents sign an acknowledgement form stating that they've read and understand the information.

The bill would require the state health department to provide instructional materials to hospitals and health professionals at their request at no cost.

An analysis of the measure says 144 Michigan infants died in 2012 because their parents or caregivers didn't know or follow safe sleep practices such as putting babies on their backs.

The legislation sponsored by Republican Rep. Gail Haines of Lake Angelus now heads to the Senate.
