Snow Causes Roof Collapse in Lansing Township

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Heavy snow buildup caused one building's roof to collapse in Lansing Township Wednesday morning.

A crew from the Lansing Township Fire Department responded to the scene around 11:00 am. Nobody was in the building, at the time of the collapse, and Fire Officials say the structure is quite old.

"The snow on the top of this building was too much for the walls and the roof structure to hold it up, and the walls gave way," said Lansing Township Fire Captain Mike Kaloz.

Kaloz said the structure, at 417 North Rosemary Ave. in Lansing, has been vacant for a number of years.

Kaloz says homeowners can be proactive about removing the snow from their roofs, especially if their roof is flat.

"That's about all we can do at this point is encourage homeowners, businesses owners that do have flat roofs, or near flat roofs to try to get that snow off," said Kaloz.
