Community Members To Prepare For Flooding

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)- With the variety of weather Mid-Michigan has seen this week, public officials are doing their best to make sure you and your home are ready for rain, and melting snow.

With the threat of flooding due to rain, warmer temps and melting snow, city, county and state officials say now is the time to prepare. "This is about making sure we stay ahead of things," says Governor Rick Snyder.

"Some of the things we would certainly advise people to do is if there are catch basins out in front of their property, and they're able to, we would certainly ask them to take five or ten minutes of their time and kind of clear any snow or ice that's in front of them or blocking that," says Chad Gamble, City of Lansing Public Service Director.

Officials say doing that will help the water from the melted snow mounds and rain get through the storm water system and into the river.

"I can advise citizens though, if they have basements that are prone to flooding, and they've had dampness and wetness in the basement before, they should make sure they get all their photo albums and valuables out of the basement before this stuff comes," says Patrick Lindeman, Ingham County Drain Commissioner.

Governor Snyder believes that it's the time to think about your neighbors, "a lot of this is being smart about these situations, so again, it's the good neighbor policy. If you know someone that has more challenges because of age or other conditions, can you help them out?"

Officials also want to remind people to make sure their sump pumps are working and to avoid driving on flooded streets. Gamble says his crews are ready to take the water and move it into the rivers, which will end up in Lake Michigan.

In the case some of that water ends up in places it shouldn't be, officials say they welcome your call for help.
