Tips To Prepare Your Basement For Storm Damage

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - Due to the melting snow and continued rain, county drain commissioners are on high alert for possible flooding.

Home repair professionals say home-owners can also do things to prepare and protect their home from the messes that winter storm tends to leave behind.

Professionals say one specific thing you should do is head to your basement and keep an eye on your sump-pump if you have one.

"Some basements already have sub pumps in them. And those should be cleaned out, make sure it has a battery back up system, just in case the power goes out. Make sure those are regularly cleaned out," said Chad Watkins, Field Supervisor, Great Lakes.

Officials also advise to check for cracks in your basement walls where water might leak in. And point downspouts away from the home so water runs in the other direction.
