A Spartan, Wolverine House Divided

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, MI (WLNS) - Every Spartan - Wolverine house divided story is unique.

Mine begins some 40 years ago with a tragedy.

Back then, my mother was the daughter of two Lebanese immigrants living in Detroit and an eager high school graduate, with one school choice in mind.

She always wanted to go to U of M., it was her dream.

But that dream came to a halt when her father died of a heart attack, just a few weeks before she could enroll in Ann Arbor.

She had to help her mother who didn't speak a lot of English. But she kept thinking if she got married and had kids, they will go to U of M.

She did get married and had my two older sisters, Jennie and Laura, who both went to college a little west of Ann Arbor.

I was her last hope and when the acceptance letter came in the mail, my mother was extatic. She was so happy, she called everybody.

After careful consideration I decided MSU was just a better fit for me. My mother recalls crying a little bit, but she got over it.

During rivalry week having three kids call Sparty home hasn't changed her loyalty one bit.

We'll sit on different sides of the couch for the game with lots of love in between.
