Snyder Calls Bankruptcy Blueprint 'Thoughtful'

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder says Detroit's emergency manager submitted a "thoughtful, comprehensive" blueprint to get the bankrupt city back on solid financial footing.

The governor released a statement Friday saying the state's focus is minimizing cuts to retiree pensions, especially people with limited incomes. He also wants to restore essential services for residents and build a foundation for Detroit's long-term stability and growth.

Snyder calls Kevyn Orr's plan of adjustment a "critical step" forward and is hoping it leads to a voluntary settlement in the mediation process.

The Republican says Detroit's long-term viability is essential for all Michigan residents, not just those living in the city.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer says Snyder never should have let pensions be put at risk in the bankruptcy filing in the first place.
