MSU Students Discuss Current Alert System

Posted: Updated:

The recent tragedies has some at Michigan State University wondering why MSU hasn't provided many updates and if they should.

Michigan State Senior Katy Sandison says January's shooting of Dominique Nolff was too close for comfort.

"Like a mile away from where I live," MSU Senior Katy Sandison said.

Sandison says received a text from campus police, but feels more should've been done.

"The fact that I was just sitting at home having no idea what was going on that's scary," Sandison said.

Two weeks later another MSU student was found dead along I-69 and these students say aside from friends and social media, they haven't heard much from the university.

"I've only gotten like one email about it," said MSU Senior Sabina Ramadhani.

"I haven't seen much directly from the police or the university," said MSU Freshman Mitchell Pence.

MSU officials told 6News there's only so much MSU could say as it's not their investigation.

"We should still be able to know that we are safe on campus and anywhere around campus," Ramadhani said.

While Ramadhani wants more updates, Mitchell Pence says if he wants them he'll do it himself.

"If there was something everyone needed to know then they would send that out."

The university says students will receive text phone and email alerts when necessary.

"I think the university is handling it well because you don't really want students to know about it, I feel that if you keep bringing it up as a recurring theme it will really bring nerves to a lot of the students and they won't want to go out," said MSU Freshman Jacob Flight.

But if they do, MSU says security is working as diligently as always to keep them safe.

Michigan State Police have issued these crime prevention and safety tips for students;
