Training Weapon Creates Afternoon Scare On MSU's Campus

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Students at MSU experienced an afternoon scare Monday when a report of a person with a gun came out.

It happened around 12:56 p.m. Monday. The campus was on lockdown while police searched for the person.

Students received text alerts around 1 p.m. and were told to head to for further information.

A student inside of the building was in class when the alert came out. "He said get everybody down, get on the floor, get up against the inner wall. Shut the blinds, shut the lights off, shut the door, so a kid behind me pulled the door shut. We grabbed our stuff and all laid down and got really close together. Everybody was pretty scared I think a couple people were crying. For several minutes there we really didn't know what was going to happen," said Matt Martin, in Bessey Hall during lockdown.

Michigan State University Police say they found a person using a training weapon at Bessey Hall and there was no threat.

Around 1:05 p.m. officers found a MSU ROTC cadet in regular clothes had been holding their replica rifle in the Bessey parking lot before entering the building with the rifle.

Students were notified around 1:06 p.m. that the all-clear was given and the alert was canceled.

Students say they commend the university on how quickly they were able to respond and say they feel a lot safer should a situation like this happen again on campus.

Michigan State University posted a link on their website for anyone who feels they need counseling: MSU Counseling.
