Three Arraigned In I-69 Student Death

Posted: Updated:

ST. JOHNS, MI (WLNS) - Three people from Saline were arraigned Monday in connection to the death of MSU student Dustyn Frolka.

The suspects include Tyrel Bredernitz, Samantha Grigg, both 18 and 16-year-old Bredan Heim.

Each suspect is facing three counts including conspiracy to commit armed robbery, armed robbery with the use of brass knuckes and felony murder in connection to the death of Dustyn Frolka. These charges could put them behind bars for life without parole.

"There really wasn't a well know relationship established between them," said Bath Detective Seargeant Gary Smith.

Seargeant Smith says through interviews, police learned there was a history of drug use. Cell phone records and other technology show the three teens and Frolka talked days before Dustyn was found along I-69 on Feb. 15.

"We feel good about where we are at, but it's a tragic event either way you look at it," said Seargeant Smith.

Through search warrants, police found cocaine, marijuana and ectasy in a truck they believe Frolka, along with the three suspects were in the night of his death.

"I would say in my opinion the driving force was more money than it was drugs," said Seargeant Smith.

Prosecuting attorney Charles Sherman wouldn't say how much money the three tried to take from Frolka, but did say, "we believe that the offense we charged took place in the vehicle on the highway just before he ended up on the highway."

Prosecutor Sherman added he feels confident about the evidence moving forward.

The investigation remains open and the prosecuting attorney says more arrests could be possible. For now a preliminary hearing for these three is set for early March.
