Couples Hope To Lift Michigan's Ban On Same-Sex Marriage

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT, MI (WLNS) - From one fight to another, a lesbian couple is fighting in Detroit right now for the right to marry.

Hoping to strike down Michgian's ban on same-sex marriage, lesbian couple Jayne Rowse and April Deboer walked hand-in-hand through a line of protesters as they entered the courthouse Tuesday morning.

Barb Byrum, Ingham County Clerk says after the couple's opening remarks the Assistant Attorney General said some very 'hateful' things.

"The attorney General is making claims that same sex parents are not as good as opposite sex parents. That's what we're seeing. They're saying hateful things," said Barb Byrum, Ingham County Clerk.

Byrum says we could expect a ruling as early as this week, but the federal trial could last two weeks.
