MSU Under Investigation For Response To Sexual Assaults On Campus

Posted: Updated:

EAST LANSING, MI (WLNS) - The U.S. Department of Education is investigating MSU's response to some sexual assaults on campus.

MSU told students about this investigation and what they're doing in response.

They're not giving details on the investigation, but it's started an important conversation about sexual assault prevention on campus.

All MSU students got the e-mail from the university on Friday. Some students are pleased to see the issue of sexual violence getting some attention.

"Finally some attention is being brought to Michigan State's lack of support to victims of sexual assault and rape," said Marie Rose, MSU 'Student for Choice' President.

Rose hopes the FED's visit will get victims and advocates the support they need.

"It's really scary to be a woman and know how often that this happens," said Rose.

There are resources available. Students involved only wish the university would take more initiative.

"I do feel like the line is always like 'we do care about our students,' but then the messages that I get from that e-mail, for instance, are always like 'well, we're doing our part, how come you're not doing yours?'" said Christianna Gluys, Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Prevetion Peer Educator.

As for the investigation by the Department of Education, Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor, MSU Police says, "I can tell you that any incidents in terms of sexual assault reports that have been reported to our department, they have been thoroughly investigated."

Now students are getting the chance to speak up about the issue.
