House Plans $215M For Road Maintenance, Projects

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Legislators in the Michigan House want to set aside $115 million more for road projects than their counterparts in the Senate.

The Republican-led House Appropriations Committee amended a mid-year spending bill Wednesday to spend an extra $100 million for snowplowing and pothole repairs statewide due to the severe winter. The panel also plans $115 million for longer-lasting transportation projects.

Overall, the House roads plan more than doubles what the Senate approved last week. But unlike the Senate, the House includes no funding to fill a shortfall in the Medicaid budget caused because a health insurance claims tax is bringing in less than expected.

House Republicans separately have proposed adding $25 to auto insurance policies to address the Medicaid shortfall.

The panel plans to vote on the budget bill later Wednesday.
