Lawmakers To Vote On Year-Round School

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)- House lawmakers will soon have the opportunity to vote on a bill that could mean year-round schools in Michigan.

The House Appropriation Committee gave the legislation the "go ahead" Wednesday to move to the house. The bill would create two million dollars in funding for schools that are considered at risk.

That money would allow the schools to upgrade facilities to let students study in the summer.

Currently some schools don't have proper ventilation or air conditioning to have classes in the summer months.

If the bill becomes law it's not mandatory for districts to become year round, rather they can choose to receive the added funds and year round schedule. Lawmakers also say that the legislation would not change the length of the school days or the number of days, but would create a more balanced calendar of time off throughout the year.
