Two Men Die Inside Burning Home

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, MI (WLNS) - Two people are dead after an early morning fire left them trapped inside a burning apartment building.

It happened around 3 a.m. Thursday on the 400 block of South Blackstone, near Jackson's downtown.

Jackson City Police Deputy Chief John Holda says there are three units in the building, all of which were damaged in the fire.

Multiple people lived inside the building, and all except two Jackson men were able to escape.

When fire officials arrived on the scene, two men, ages 58 and 59  were still inside. Both were pulled from the home, but they did not survive.

"They checked for anybody inside the residence and located two individuals that had died in the fire," said Holda, "They were removed from the residence and [firefighters] spent the rest of the morning basically fighting the fire at the house."

Because the fire was a fatal one, a fire marshall from the Michigan State Police is leading the investigation into what caused the blaze.

"They're looking at possible origins of the fire, and if there's anything out of the ordinary with it. No preliminary information yet, they're still working on that," said Holda.
