Maintenance Repairs At Fault For Apartment Fire

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, MI (WLNS) - Lansing firefighters battled flames and the brutally cold weather at an apartment fire in Lansing Friday morning.

It happened around 9:30 a.m. in the 1100 block of Dorchester on the city's west side.

The Lansing Fire Department says the fire displaced seven people from Belmont Park Apartments. Red Cross was brought in to help out. Fire officials say luckily, their apartments aren't a total loss and expect those displaced to return home in a few days.

The fire happened while workers performed maintenance on the building and preliminary results believe the fire was accidential as a result of that work.

For the past six weeks contractors have been hard at work at Belmont Park Apartments, only to see their work go up in smoke around 9:30 a.m. Friday.

"It looks like the two apartments that were affected that had flames in them, it looked like they were on the northwest corner," said Charles Stadt, Lansing Fire PIO.

That's not what the new manager Joe Rojek wanted to hear. He's spent the last year since he took over as manager fixing up the place.

"It's unfortunate, but the good thing is that everyone is alright, hopefully it's not a total loss," said Joe Rojeck, Manager, Belmont Park Apartments.

Crews believe the fire started on the second floor and quickly spread to the attic. Fortunately even with low water pressure, caused by cold weather conditions, crews were able to keep the damage to a minimum.

The manager says the damage doesn't look too bad, which is good news because he plans on putting crews back to work as soon as possible.

"We have an idea to make this one of the nicer communities in the area in South Lansing, people have seen the renovations that we've been making and they've been really happy," said Rojeck.

Rojeck says despite the fire, "we'll get back to work and we'll fix it." He remains optimistic about the future.
