Annual Event Promotes Health, Well-Being

Posted: Updated:

An event today has people on the road to living and feeling better. It offers free health screenings and health information.

The annual "health fest" event hosted by the Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital took place at Alive wellness center in Charlotte.

Nearly 300 people attended the event. Some were regulars, others for the very first time, like Laura Cooper.

For her, health is a top priority.

"Health is very important to me and over the last year, I've been on a health journey and I figured it was time to come up here and take part of the screenings," said Cooper.

People got their BMI checked, as well as blood pressure, blood sugar and fasting cholesterol as well just to name a few.

"There is almost 60 different exhibits that are all related to being healthy and well," said Barbara Fulton, Community Development Director at HGB Hospital.

"Our goal is to help people learn things you can do in any season and if you have been a little bit in the hibernation mode this year, how to we start to prepare for the warm weather," said Fulton.

Even though the event is free, organizers say some people are hesitant to get checked, especially for  cancer screenings.

Doctors say that the reason why many people don't get their screenings is because they are afraid of the results will say. But they add it is important to get them to stop a disease in early stages of development.

"If people would just put some of that aside and just do the screening that they're suppose to do they could find their disease early and be treated so much more simply," said Dr. Carol Rapson from Red Cedar Oncology.

As for Cooper, she thinks that events like this are crucial to staying healthy and fit.

"Just take charge of your health," said Cooper. "That's the most important thing. You only get one shot at your health."
