EAST LANSING, MICH. (WLNS) -

Young robotic masters gathered at Michigan State University to compete with the best today.

The second annual "Vex Robotics" state school championships were held at the Jenison Field house.

The competition is made up of robotic design teams from middle schools and high schools across the state. Teams build robots to perform tasks and go head-to-head with other schools.

Organizers say the even is a great way to introduce students to a career in engineering.

"Our number of students in engineering at MSU are up 50% over the last 6 years," said Leo Kempel, Acting Dean of MSU's College of Engineering. "Events like this are part of the way we show young kids the pathway to that future career."

Haslett and Lansing teams were among 50 schools vying for state honors.
