Expert Offers Healthy Breakfast Ideas For Busy Families

LANSING, MI (WLNS) - Are you sick of hearing the phrase, "breakfast is the most important meal of the day"?

Well, the phrase isn't going away anytime soon because breakfast is a very important meal.

Health experts say a good breakfast fuels you and gets you ready for the day.

In general adults, children and teens who eat breakfast have more energy, do better in school, and eat healthier throughout the day. Without breakfast, people can get irritable, restless, and tired.

To fight those negative feelings, it's best to plan time for breakfast for you and your children.

Preparing breakfast can be easy and fun, says health expert, Debbie Jamieson from Jamieson's Total Health Care.
If you are a mom or dad with a family on the go, prepping meals at night is also an option.

Pick 2-3 foods, including at least one from each of the following food groups:

  • Bread and grains (cereal, toast, muffin)
  • Milk and milk products (low-fat yogurt, low-fat milk)
  • Fruits or vegetables (bananas, apples, carrots)
  • Pick up portable breakfast items when at the grocery store. You should buy foods like fruit, low-fat yogurt, whole grain breakfast bars or granola bars for those mornings when you have to eat breakfast on the go.
  • Orange Juice - Replace or accompany that morning cup of coffee with a glass of orange juice or milk.
  • Make an omelette - You can shorten preparation time by chopping up your vegetables ahead of time.
  • Wake up 15 minutes earlier - You can fix and consume a healthy breakfast in 15 minutes or less.

Jamieson recommends planning ahead to eat breakfast. This means you should decide what you are going to eat for breakfast before the next morning. You can save time by putting out the box of cereal or cutting up some fruit the night before.
