Judge Refuses To Let Witness Testify In Same-Sex Marriage Trial

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT, MI (WLNS) - State officials are preparing to defend the ban on same-sex marriage in Michigan, which was approved by voters in 2004.

The state is expected to call economists and sociologists to the stand on Monday.

Earlier Monday Oakland County Clerk Lisa Brown took the stand and testified. The Attorney General's Office warned County Clerk's Offices last fall not to issue marriage licenses, even if a judge threw out the ban.

The trial is off to a rough start after a judge refused to allow the first witness to testify.

Sherif Girgis is a law student at Yale University and a doctoral candidate at Princeton University. He has written and talked about a historical defense of marriage between a man and a woman.

Federal Judge Bernard Friedman says Girgis will be an expert witness - someday. Friedman says Girgis' opinions won't help him decide this case.

Hundreds of supporters of same-sex marriage rallied outside the federal courthouse Monday morning.

The trial's expected to continue throughout this week.
