Medical Clinic Opens To Help Homeless

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, MI (WLNS) - Monday marked opening day for Sparrow's medical clinic at Volunteers of America.

The clinic will provide regular health care for homeless people at the VOA.

It's just the second of its kind in the entire country.

The first patient visited Sparrow's medical clinic at the VOA Monday morning and had only good things to say.

"They show love and they really helped me out," said Paul Ballew, Homeless.

Paul Ballew says he's been self-medicating himself for years, but on Monday he was finally able to get professional care.

"At least now I got a primary care doctor. It's a good thing"

And so far all of the patients are extremely grateful, as many of them haven't seen a family doctor in years, if ever.

"What I've seen today is smiling faces and people happy to see a doctor where they live," said Dr. Lynn Nevin, Physician/Practice Leader, Sparrow Medical Group at VOA.

Executive Vice President Patrick Patterson says the shelter is attached to the clinic for a reason. VOA staff want to integrate Sparrow's medical care with their 13 service programs.

"I think we will be a light of progress of innovation for others," said Patterson.

They also hope it'll be a solution for homeless people's frequent visits to the emergency room, which average 12 per person each year.

Everyone at the VOA and clinic are thrilled to be a part of the new center.

And the patients, they're just getting used to having doctors around.

The clinic has eight rooms for everything from checkups to physicals and small surgical procedures.

Patterson says he hopes to share this solution with other cities homeless shelters.

For now they're just figuring out how the clinic will best serve this community.
