Suspect's Body Found After Armed Robbery

Posted: Updated:

OKEMOS, Mich. (WLNS) - A more than eight hour search for an armed bank robber ended Monday night when officials found the 43-year-old man dead inside a deer blind.

It all started just after 2 p.m. Monday, Meridian Township police said the man robbed an Okemos PNC Bank at gunpoint, stole cash and took off.

"Our officers did pick up the vehicle traveling north on Marsh Road. We were pursuing him for a moment and then other agencies from the area picked up the pursuit as he headed into Shiawassee County," said Lt. Greg Frenger of the Meridian Township Police department.

The man sped off and crashed his car into the median of I-69. Police said he ran into the woods near Durand and they followed him in.

While the cold weather was a concern for the safety of the police officers out searching for the suspect, officials said the snow helped them track the suspect to the deer blind. "There was a set of tracks that went to an elevated deer blind and none coming out, so we were pretty confident that the subject was in the deer blind," said Sheriff George Braidwood of the Shiawassee County Sheriff's Office.

Officials set up a perimeter around the blind and started the search around 10:30 p.m. Monday. That's when they found the man had hung himself inside the blind.

"When you have a situation that's that extreme and that emotionally packed you got to be able to anticipate anything and that's why the teams work so slow and methodical when they have information that an individual is armed," Sheriff Braidwood said.

Officials in Meridian Township said they're working with the FBI. They said the man might be connected to other unsolved bank robberies both locally and statewide.

At this time, the 43-year-old man's name is not being released.
