JACKSON, MI (WLNS) - Police are investigating a suspicious fire that broke out Tuesday morning in Jackson.
It happened around 11 a.m. Tuesday in the 700 block of Steward Ave., near Webb Street.
Around 1:40 p.m. officials began tearing down the building.
A neighbor said his dogs aren't usually loud in the morning, but today they were. "I was at my house getting ready to make breakfast and when I looked out my window," said Peter Foerst.
He could see his neighbor's house along Steward and Webb quickly filling with smoke and flames pouring out of the basement. "I watched them make entry into the back of the structure," recalls Foerst.
That's where Assistant Fire Chief Steve Childs believes the fire started. "We're unable to put water on it because of the electrical being involved, unfortunately it went up from there," said Fire Chief Childs.
Jackson police tell 6 News a witness told them they saw someone they knew in the area around the time of the fire pouring or dumping near the home. Police continue to investigate the fire as possible arson. Crews also struggled to shut off the gas, which forced multiple crews and ladders to come to the rescue.
"The structure is unsafe to put people inside and most definitely it's a defensive fire, a lot of water from the outside."
Fortunately all those that believe to live there got out okay. For close to three hours, crews pulled out all the stops, but ultimately the house couldn't take the heat and was reduced to rubble.
"When they get ahead of you, most definitely this is what happens," says Fire Chief Childs.
Jackson City Police arrested a suspect they believe may have been involved in the suspicious fire. Police saw a man leaving the scene of the fire in an SUV. They tracked the suspect to Roxbury Circle in Summit Twp., where they stopped the SUV.
The driver has a felony warrant for criminal sexual conduct and was illegally carrying a handgun. The suspect was placed into custody on the warrant along with the concealed weapons violation.
Police are continuing to investigate the fire and whether or not the suspect was involved in the fire.
