House OKs Road Money, Accounts For Medicaid Delay

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A divided Michigan House has approved a mid-year spending bill that includes extra money for road maintenance and accounts for a delay in the contentious expansion of Medicaid.

The Republican-led chamber on Tuesday voted 65-44 for the legislation headed back to the Senate. The bill is all but certain to be sent to a conference committee because of differences between the House and Senate.

The House roads plan more than doubles what the Senate approved. But unlike the Senate, the House includes no funding to fill a $115 million shortfall in the Medicaid budget caused because a health insurance claims tax is bringing in less than expected.

Republicans rejected Democrats' attempts to add money for a hospital in Detroit or to help a Detroit-area transit authority get up and running.
