Mental Health Services Facing Dark Future

Posted: Updated:

6 News Capitol Correspondent Tim Skukbick is looking into the dispute at the Capitol.

The senate has passed one plan to fund community mental health, but the house has another plan and the governor's office has a third plan.

While the clock is ticking toward a March 15 deadline, there is no agreement yet on how to keep mental health services flowing.

Community mental heath boards around the state provide counseling, integration programs to mainstream the mentally ill, and in-jail services.

The Lt. Governor says this is a critical population that may lose critical services if the impasse is not resolved soon.

Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, Lansing: "The population here doesn't really have a lot of options, especially in rural Michigan, where the mental health board is the only provider. Without that access point, it would be a difficult time which is why I'm confident that we can come to an agreement to avoid the problem."

The three sides face this hurdle.

State Rep. Matt Lori (r), Chair, Mental Health Budget: "The biggest disagreement is the amount of money and how we give it to them. We'll get it worked out."

With hundreds of workers and thousands of mental health recipients, the word has gone out, be prepared for layoffs.

State Sen. John Moolenaar (r), Chair, Mental Health Budget: "Right now they are in the process of information recipients, there may some glitches in the funding. We are working so there is no problem."

If the three sides don't agree, the lack of mental health services is next.

LANSING, MI (WLNS) - Mental health advocates are predicting widespread layoffs and a loss of services for patients, if state lawmakers don't resolve a budget impasse by March 15.
