East Lansing Settles Police Complaint For $35,000

Posted: Updated:

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The city of East Lansing will pay $35,000 after a man said a city police officer used excessive force while restraining him in January 2013.

City Council unanimously approved the settlement Tuesday night after watching video of the incident recorded on a patrol car's dash camera. City officials didn't release the name of the person who filed the complaint.

Police Chief Julie Liebler said she investigated the complaint after learning of it in May. She and other officials concluded that the officer acted without malice toward the suspect but used inappropriate force. She says she thinks it was "an honest mistake."

The officer tackled a man during the incident. Liebler says the officer, who still is employed by the department, has been disciplined.
