Charges Dropped Against Mentally Ill Man

INGHAM COUNTY, MI (WLNS) - Prosecutors have decided to drop the charges against Kosgar Lado.

Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III said the words the Lado family has been waiting nearly eight months to hear.

"I'm announcing today the Ingham county prosecutor's office is dismissing all charges against Mr. Lado," said Dunnings during an impromptu press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Dunnings said the proof he needed, reports from the Stonecrest Mental Health Center in Detroit showing Kosgar Lado was mentally ill at the time he falsely confessed to police, just came into his office.

"I want to point out that this evaluation is now four months old, and that the prosecutor's office did not receive those records until yesterday after the close of business," said Dunnings.

Dunnings' office has come under serious pressure from the community, and the ACLU, to drop the charges against Lado, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia.

"Praise the lord. It was a miracle. I'm so pleased and glad," said Julia Lado, Kosgar's sister.

Family members say they're just happy this ordeal is behind them.

Sawsen Lado, another of Kosgar's sisters, says their brother's court battle was difficult for their family, and the community's support was a needed comfort.

"I really thank them because they really helped us through a lot. When we thought there was no hope, they were the hope for us," said Sawsen.

Now they say they'll focus on helping their brother Kosgar put his life back together.
