Michigan Unemployment Rate Falls To 7.8 Percent

Posted: Updated:

The unemployment rate for the month of January for Michigan stands at 7.8 percent. This rate is down from 8.3 percent in December and 8.9 percent in January 2013.

The state department of Technology, Management and Budget said that it is the lowest jobless rate since May 2008.

11 thousand jobs were added and 2013 marks the fourth consecutive year that the states annual unemployment rate decreased.

But the numbers don't tell the whole story, Matt Clymer is just one of many people who have been looking for work for months.

He is a skilled welder that got laid off when his employer went out of business, and things aren't getting any easier.

"To be a parent that has to look at their kids and tell them I can't get this for you or I can't help you here...its difficult," said Clymer.

He says his search for work seems endless, with no sign of good news.

The 7.8 percent unemployment rate is better than in pervious years but it isn't surprising according to the Anderson Economic Group.

"Michigan's unemployment rate has been down for the last 3 years," said Patrick Anderson, CEO of Anderson Economic Group. "And that's a good thing. It should be down because we are 4 years now into recovery from the great recession."

As for Clymer, he remains hopeful that he won't have to return to Capital Area Michigan Works anytime soon.

"I come here everyday, hoping and praying that ill find something," said Clymer.

While the state's rate is down, it is still above the national unemployment rate of 6.6 percent.
