Escape Report Reveals Elliot Planned For Months

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - On Thursday The Michigan Department of Corrections released their comprehensive report reviewing a convicted killer's escape from an Ionia County prison on Super Bowl Sunday.

6 News Joe Khalil has been following the story since it broke. He took a further look at the report and found "it was interesting to say the least."

The report explains how Michael Elliot escaped and there are a lot of details we didn't have before.

The bottom line according to the report is this was a combination of human error and equipment failure.

The report says Elliot had planned the escape for four months, eyeing weak spots in the fence.

He was waiting for Superbowl Sunday to pull it off.

He waited until the outside guard turned their back just for a moment. He was able to make it behind a housing unit, to the spot near the weak fence and he dug underneath.

He pried the fencing wire loose, using a hook he broke off from his locker.

Now at this point there are multiple other levels of security in place, but all of them failed.

He got through two zones where there are censors. For whatever reason officers failed to secure those alarms.

One of the censors begins detecting people three feet off the ground. Elliot was able to crawl underneath it, undetected.

One perimeter police car was circling, but the officer never saw Elliot because his white clothing, which he made from his own thermal underwear allowed him to blend in with the snow.

There was a shock fence installed, but the report says it's been inactive for several years. It was just a number of failures on different levels.

It finishes with the department listing all the ways it'll correct everything that went wrong to make sure this doesn't happen again.

6 News will be following up in the upcoming days.
