Health Dept. Makes Final Rounds At Life O'Riley

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- It was a somber scene Saturday at the Life O'Riley Mobile Home Park, less than 24 hours after residents were forced to leave their homes.

Outside the empty trailers sit furniture, bags of trash and even wandering cats left behind.

"For us to really feel like we need to displace people, it was very serious. That was why the decision was made to condemn the property," said Debbie Edokpolo, the Assistant Deputy Health Officer at the Ingham County Health Department.

Feb. 25 Ingham County Health Department workers condemned the mobile home park. They gave residents 10 days to leave Life O'Riley and find a new place to live.

Saturday morning workers from the Ingham County Health Department went door-to-door to post notices, which ban people from living inside the homes because of sanitation issues.

"This is the official notice that we've given to the owners of the property that it's unsafe and all residents have to vacate," Edokpolo said.

Now that residents have left, officers from Ingham County Animal Control stopped to look for dogs and cats still there. This week workers took in nearly 20 pets they say were either surrendered or left.

"We also have folks that are temporarily housing their animals at the shelter. They can come and take care of their animals every day until they can find permanent housing we'll hold them for them and then they'll get their animals back," said Anne Burns, the Interim Director at the Ingham County Animal Control.

Animal control officers hope to head back to the mobile home park to search the evicted homes. They worry more animals may be hiding inside.

If residents from Life O'Riley have questions, the Ingham County Health Department asks them to call the health department (517) 887-4312 or the City of Lansing (517) 483-4477.
