BWL Already Preparing For Future Power Outages

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - The Board of Water and Light met Monday with the Community Review Team created to investigate the company's response December's ice storm.

So, what went wrong? That's the question the Community Review Team appointed by Mayor Virg Bernero is asking Board of Water and Light Officials.

It's been three months since thousands of customers lost power, some for 10 days. It's a situation many are still fired up about.

The review team says the biggest issue with the company's response was the lack of communication to customers. BWL officials agree and say they're working on a restoration map to tell customers when their power will be restored.

The BWL did have an Outage Management System (OMS) in place during the ice storm, but the system wasn't working correctly. When customers call to report an outage, the information is supposed to automatically register and show up on the OMS.

Board members say too many people were trying to call in and the OMS wasn't updating.

BWL's General Manager Peter Lark says all problems with the map system have been fixed.

Lark says the BWL will take preventative measures in the future. He believes more branches need to be cut down and cleared away from power lines, so that a major power outage does not happen in the future.

The board was open and honest with anyone who asked questions.

The company has also created a medical alert list to prevent power shut-off to those with medical needs.
