BWL Unveils New Interactive Outage Map

Posted: Updated:

Want to know where the Lansing Board of Water and Light has power outages?

That information is now just a point and click away.

The utility unveiled its new interactive outage map on Monday.

Word of the new map came out during BWL's testimony before a Community Response Team (CRT) that was set up to investigate the utility's challenges during a December 2013 ice storm that left some customers in the dark for up to 10 days.

BWL faces extensive criticism for not being able to tell customers specifically where the outages were and when they might get their power back.

At the time, the utility didn't have a system similar to its larger counterparts at Consumers Energy or DTE, which have maps that highlight where the power outages are, how many people are affected, and when they might get their power back.

After the crisis, BWL released static PDF maps of outages, which showed where an outage was happening, but little else.

The new map is tied into the BWL's "outage management system" - the system that let's the company know where power is out. That system was down for 7 months prior to the ice storm and not repaired until about a week after the storm struck.
