Local Schools Discuss Education Changes

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)- With potential changes coming to the education of special education students, local parents took to an open forum to voice their displeasure.

Lansing Community College hosted one of two public hearings on Monday to discuss the changes that largely deal with the language used and how students are evaluated.

The Department of Education says that these changes are aligning Michigan with federal standards, but parents and other advocates say the changes will impact how students learn and the changes aren't good for the state.

"My concern is just making sure that we continue to provide the quality education that Michigan is known for. We're a state known for special education and I would hate to let that falter,' said Kathryn Foster-Dupuis, Carlton teacher.

Public comment on the changes end Thursday at 5 p.m..
