Sleeping 5-Year-Old Girl Left On School Bus

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, MI (WLNS) - It's not a call any parent wants to get.

A 5-year-old girl was found wandering on the street Monday after she was left on her school bus.

She was returned to her school safely, but her family wants to know why she was even in this situation.

6 News spoke to the little girl and others involved about what went wrong Monday morning.

Phyllis Manuel got a call around 11:20 Monday morning from her granddaughter's school, asking her to come to the Waverly School bus garage.

"I was thinking that MaNiah did something on the bus that she shouldn't have done," said Phyllis Manuel, MaNiah's grandmother.

But that's not what happened.

"I was hiding on the bus, and then I went to sleep, and then I was crying, and then I was walking," said MaNiah Davis.

MaNiah, 5, says she fell asleep on her way to Colt Elementary, in the second or third seat from the front and woke up on an empty bus.

She then headed along St. Joseph Road, a very busy road where her bus driver saw her and personally took her to school.

There's not even a sidewalk on the road MaNiah was found on.

To me that was tragedy. Because she could have been dead, kidnapped, hit by a car, anything on that busy road," says MaNiah's grandma.

"Bus driver policy is before they leave the bus to check for any debris, any students," said Vince Perkins, Waverly Community Schools, Human Resources Director.

Perkins admits that didn't happen on Monday. Maniah's bus driver, who has worked with Waverly more than 10 years arrived at school early and had to move her bus before she could do a walk-through.

"That's still no excuse to leave a student on the bus," said Perkins.

And while MaNiah's grandma is still shocked about what happened to her granddaughter, she's taking this opportunity to teach a lesson to her kids.

"Stay awake on that bus and don't go to sleep," said Manuel.
