Man Loses Home Twice In Two Weeks

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)- Lansing fire officials say that a fire in the Riverview Estates Mobile Home Park that destroyed one home looks to be an accident.

Our Nick Perreault spoke with the owner who says that rebuilding will be tough, but he feels fortunate to have survived.

Rick Horton says he is okay after a fire ripped through his mobile home, destroying everything.

The fire started shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday, when Horton says he started to boil some water, went to shave and was caught in a "bomb of fire". A fire that he says literally blew him out the door. "The dogs fortunately followed me apparently and Peanut went the other way," said Horton after losing his 6-year-old cat Peanut in the fire.

Officials say that Horton's home was considered a total lose. "I borrowed about a $1,000 to move, I don't have any money left," said Horton. The disabled vet just moved his trailer last week out of Life O'Riley Mobile Home Complex.

The county health department condemned the mobile home park for sewage concerns.

"We're just going to try to make sure he gets some place warm tonight," said Marshaun Blake, Lansing Fire Department Inspector. The fire department is working with Horton to find a place to stay if he can't stay with family.

Despite all that he has lost, Horton's not giving up, and says "I've got to count my blessings and can't do anything about what's happened, just have to push on and see what I can figure out".
