Abortion Insurance Law Now In Effect

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - A new Michigan law requiring people or businesses to buy extra health insurance to terminate a pregnancy went into effect Thursday.

Republicans who passed the law want to keep taxpayer-subsidized plans on Michigan's new insurance market-place from covering abortions.

The measure also applies to employer plans sold to individuals outside the exchange.

Democrats and pro-choice advocates fiercely opposed the legislation when it was approved in December.

"If people are able to by rape insurance, if they can find it somewhere. I think it's pretty devastating for people's right to health care. And I'm disappointed it's going into effect," said Sen. Jim Ananich (D), 27th district.
