Group Trying To Get Wolf Hunt Back On The Ballot

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, MI (WLNS) - The group "Keep Michigan Wolves Protected" launched their second attempt to make their voice heard.

On Thursday the group gathered at the State Capitol for a conference as they collected 230,000 signatures to put the wolf hunt on the ballot for 2014.

Last year the group collected more than 250,000 signatures for the same reason, but the legislature over ruled it and passed a bill taking away the right from the voters.

Organizers say that Michigander's want their wolves protected and feel strongly about this issue.

"They're outraged not only that Michigan wolves are being hunted but the legislature took the extra step to take away their right to vote. So people feel very strongly about protecting our wolves," said Jill Fritz, Director, Keep Michigan Wolves Protected.

Michigander's in all 83 counties signed both petitions on the ballot referendums expressing their support to protect the wild life.

This past season 23 wolves were killed of about a total population of 650.
