Mild Flooding Expected In Lansing

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, MI (WLNS) - The snow may finally be heading out of mid-Michigan, but flooding is now the problem for many people.

So, how much can we expect and how can you prepare for all that water?

City officials say to expect mild flooding for now, especially at the area of the Potter Park Zoo entrance.

But that could all change, it really depends on mother nature and what kind of weather we get in the next few weeks.

And the longer we head toward spring with colder temperatures, the greater chance of a sudden warm up with rain.

The snow volume, frost depth and ice on the rivers are all contributing to a possible high flood risk this spring.

But officials add that for now the current forecast is showing limiting flooding.

"The warm days, cool nights, snow melt off gives rivers a chance to absorb the water and send the water downstream," said Michael Hamel, Emergency Management Coordinator, City of Lansing.

There are about 2,100 homes that are in flood planes in Lansing and about 200 businesses.
