Hundreds Line Up For Mobile Food Pantry

Posted: Updated:

CORUNNA, Mich. (WLNS) -- Combine months of brutal weather with high heating bills and food stamp cuts and this season is taking a toll on community members in need.

Robert Schuler thanks volunteers, as he fills his basket with bread, turkey and potatoes from the Greater Lansing Food Bank's mobile food pantry.

"I know they're going to hand out food and that helps. Now-a-days everything is going up, especially gas, you know, you have to scrape and it's hard to get by," Schuler said.

He said the food from the mobile food pantry helps feed him and his wife for two weeks. After that, the Schuler's rely on food stamps. However, the new Farm Bill cut federal funding for families in need. These days, Schuler said he gets nearly $20 less for food each month.

He's just one of hundreds in Shiawassee County who depend on the food bank.

"People,  like me, and other people, they need help," he said.

Saturday Greater Lansing Food Bank workers brought enough food to feed 400 people. Any food that wasn't used stays at food banks in Shiawassee County.

"The need is great everywhere in our seven counties, but it's particularly great right now in this county. We're trying to get as much food out to our counties as we can, but the winter has taken an extreme toll," said Kim Gladstone, the External Relations Manager at the Greater Lansing Food Bank.

The weather is also affecting those who give to the food bank. Donations are down, but workers said they're doing what they can to bring food to people, like Schuler, who need it the most.

"You just have to go one step at a time and you'll make it. As long as you're warm you're good to go," Schuler said.

Despite the tough winter, Schuler stays optimistic and said he's thankful for the food bank.
