U.S. Issues Sanctions Against Russia

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - President Obama is warning Russia there are consequences for its actions in the Crimea region of Ukraine.

President Obama says the US is ready to take further steps if necessary.

This is just a day after Crimean's voted overwhelmingly to split from the Ukrainian mainland and join Russia.

President Obama called the referendum illegal and announced sanctions against Russia.

The US also slapped sanctions on 7 Russian government officials and 4 Ukrainians, including Ukraine's former President.

"The United States stands with the people of Ukraine and their right to determine their own destiny."

White House officials say there is concrete evidence that some ballots for Sunday's referendum in Crimea were pre-marked to support the split from Ukraine.

Results showed 97 percent of residents voted in favor of the break.

Back here at home a roundtable discussion is scheduled for Monday night at Michigan State University where professors will address the future territorial integrity and stability of the country.
