Alcohol Sales Aren't Planned At Michigan Stadium

Posted: Updated:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - The University of Michigan's athletic director says the school isn't planning to open up its football stadium for alcohol sales.

Dave Brandon says that Michigan Stadium, which is the largest football venue in the country, will remain alcohol-free. The liability and risk of serving alcohol at a stadium where many fans are under the legal drinking age are among the factors.

Brandon also says supporting new infrastructure at the Big House and managing alcohol sales would be costly.

Alcohol was sold at Michigan Stadium under a special arrangement for the NHL's Winter Classic game Jan. 1 between the Detroit Red Wings the Toronto Maple Leafs. That move required approval from the state legislature. Some other college football stadiums serve alcohol.
