Officials Reprimand Students For Twitter Posts

Posted: Updated:

HOWELL, Mich. (AP) - High school officials in Howell say they've reprimanded students involved in posting racist messages on Twitter after the school's nearly all-white basketball team defeated a team with black and white players.

Messages were posted after Howell on Thursday beat Grand Blanc 54-49 in a Class A regional final at Linden High School. The messages made reference to Howell's team being white and included a Ku Klux Klan reference.

According to the news website MLive, some of the tweets included:

  • "Not only did we beat Grand Blanc but we're all white. Howell's the definite winner tonight."
  • "All hail white power. #HitlerIsMyDad"
  • "Tonight was probably one of the most racists nights of my life. I heard so many slurs and expressions. I also said a few things..."

MLive also says students used hashtags including "#kkk, #lightthehcross, #rosaparks, #wewhite."

Howell High School Principal Jason Schrock says the school "responded to each instance and is moving forward." The Detroit News and WHMI-FM report the students involved were not affiliated with the school's basketball program. Howell next plays Tuesday.

WHMI also reports that other students called the tweeters out on their behavior, and that those tweeters subsequently apologized.

Grand Blanc Schools Superintendent Norman Abdella says he believes that Howell administrators will appropriately handle the situation.
