Pricey Trip For March Madness Fans

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- After a big show Sunday night, the Spartans head out west for the first round of the NCAA tournament.

As the Spartans head to Spokane, Washington, travel agents in Lansing stay busy booking flights, hotels and bundling packages.

"I've had probably about two dozen emails and about a dozen phone calls," said Dennis Hamilton, president of Spartan Sports Tours.

Hamilton said MSU fans want to see their Spartans play in the tournament, but flights out west are expensive. The cheapest flight Fly Lansing Concierge Travel manager Liz Andrews could find was close to $1,000.

"A little pricey, but it's always pricey to go out west last minute," Andrews said.

While flights on their own are expensive, travel agents say bundling extras, like car rentals and hotels saves you hundreds of dollars.

"I think you're going to have to be creative to go out there," Andrews said.

Michigan fans are lucky. Andrews said many will drive or take the train to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Those who want to fly will spend about $500.

Hamilton said he's already planning fan packages for the tournament finals.

"An overall package would be somewhere between $2,000 and $3,000," said Hamilton.

If the Spartans make it that far, which experts predict they just might, Hamilton said it's money well spent.

"How else can you go to a Rose Bowl and also to a Final Four in the same year? It's a bucket dream list," he said.

Tickets to the finals in Texas are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. Hamilton said fans can pre-register online.

MSU plays on Thursday at 4:50 p.m. on TNT. Michigan plays at 7:10 p.m. on TV 6.
