Snow Makeup Equals A Good Friday For Class

Posted: Updated:

Spring arrives officially on Thursday, but after this winter, school officials from all across the state are trying to figure out how they're going to make up missed days because snow days.

Our Nick Perreault caught up with one school district doing something they haven't done in years.

The snow is finally starting to melt in Portland.

"I've been here 23 years, in education 38 years and this is by far the worst winter I've ever experienced in my career in education," said Portland Superintendent Charles Dumas.

From the amount of snow to the wind and timing, Superintendent Charles Dumas says even going back to 2007, the school district hasn't had to make up more than one snow day.

"At this point we've missed 13 days, which six we are excused for, so we have to make up seven," Dumas said.

To do that the school district is adding five days to the end of the year, having students come in a on staff development day and for the first time in at least 23 years, come in on Good Friday. A decision voted on by the school board.

"It was about balancing out the plans they might have then with the plans that families might have during the summer and Good Friday seemed liked the easiest choice," said School Board President Justin Hengesbach.

Now it's only for a half of day, but from elementary to high school students, the superintendent says don't worry if you've already made plans for Easter or summer vacation.

"We will work around it, we'll let you take exams early, leave with your family when you're scheduled too."

A half day might seem pointless to those in class, but the superintendent says if they didn't do that students could see themselves coming to school into the fourth week in June.

The last day for students at Portland high will now be June 18th instead of June 11th.
